The Types and Causes of Brain Cancer
In this world, there is no shortage of things that can hurt us. Cancer, and brain cancer specifically, is one of those. If you are asking how rare is brain cancer and whether you should be concerned or prepared, let us stop you for a second. According to the American Cancer Society, the general individual’s chances of contracting brain cancer tumors is about one percent.
If you think that piece of news is worth celebrating, though, it is not. To this day, we do not know what causes brain cancer. We do not know because the causes for this are much less well-defined than other cancers. However, in the absence of solid brain tumor causes, we have instead narrowed down some brain cancer risk factors, which we will discuss next.
Brain Tumor Risk Factors
There are several risk factors for brain cancer, and you need to be aware of every single one of them. We have included these in the list below:
- Gender: Some brain cancer types are more common in males than in females, and this goes both ways. For example, meningiomas are something women have to deal with more frequently, while men have medulloblastomas in a similar vein.
- Age: while there is no wrong or right brain tumor age, the chances of developing it do increase as one ages. In actual fact, individuals above 65 years of age are the most likely to develop brain cancer. Again, this is not set in stone as brain cancer can happen at any age, but this is a good rule of thumb to follow.
- Immunity: Those people who suffer from a compromised immune system, or have some form of immunodeficiency syndrome, are more likely to develop lymphomas in their brains.
- Genetics: Now, though there is very little evidence to show that brain cancer is genetic, there are some rare forms of brain cancer that are passed on through genes. The main examples of these hereditary brain cancers are Von Hippel-Lindau disease, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, and two variants of Neurofibromatosis.
- Exposure to chemicals: If you are exposed to hazardous chemicals that can increase your chances of getting cancer, you should consult a doctor about this and see whether anything can be done – starting with a new career as soon as possible.
- Radiation treatment: In an ironic twist of fate, if you have received radiation therapy to cure yourself of cancer before, especially at a very young age, you are at a higher risk of contracting brain cancer later on in your life.
Again, this does not constitute a definitive list of causes of brain cancer because we simply do not know how it happens. However, by keeping a check on these risk factors, we can at least be aware, to a certain extent, of whether or not we are at risk.
